# 3월 초 미국 샌프란시스코에서 열렸던 Paid contents 2011 행사에서 미디어들이 태블릿에 너무 일찍, 너무 지나치게 올인하고 있는 것이 아닌가는 분석이 나와 눈길을 끌고 있음. 조심스럽게 하지만 전략적으로 접근해야 함을 강조하는 것으로 보임.

Forrester 수석애널리스트인 Sarah Rotman Epps이 매우 중요한 태블릿+미디어 비즈니스 현황을 소개하고, 조언을 하고 있음.

Don’t over-invest (미디어들, 태블릿에 너무 일찍 과대투자 하지 마라)

“Many media companies have over-invested in these devices. It might not be realistic to have huge, huge investment in this market,” Epps said in a morning address.

March to Apple’s drumbeat (결국 올해 태블릿은 애플이 시장 80% 장악할 것… 이는 애플이 잘해서라기 보다는 안드로이드 등 각종 유사 제품들의 차별점이나 경쟁력이 없다는 것을 의미하는 것임.)

In the wake of Apple’s controversial recent subscription announcement and, having spoken with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) product marketing SVP Phil Schiller at Wednesday’s iPad 2 event, Epps shared with us her conclusion: “Apple’s prospect (to publishers) is, ‘you don’t really need this data, you have plenty of other data you can use’. They’re trying to protect their ecosystem and give a clean experience to users.”

앱 가격을 자주 바꾸어 사용자들 사이에서 입에 오르내리게 하고, 이를 통해 매출을 높여가는 사례도 있다. (오늘 OOO앱이 싸게 나왔어~ 등의 주목)

In that regard, what works? Epps cited the surprising example of Splashtop, a freemium iPad remote desktop app whose publisher stretches its premium price “dynamically” between $1.99 and $9.99. “They realised, the more frequently they change the price of the app, the better it sells, because there are these app deals websites that tell people, ‘There’s a deal on Splashtop today.” <계속>

iPad imitators are failing (아이패드 따라쟁이들은 이미 실패하고 있다. 비싸고, 아이패드와 본질적인 차별점이 없고, iOS에 비해 OS 성능의 한계... 삼성, 모토로라 등 모두 해당) 특히 미숙한 안드로이드에 몰려 가지 마라고 조언.

Epps acknowledged the coming wave of Android and other tablets, which “will offer publishers a lot more flexibility over their monetization models and customer data”.

“However - we see solid products with fatally flawed product strategies - products that are priced too high, relying too much on carriers for pricing and distribution strategy and are not radically diff enough to grab significant market share this year.”

RIM’s Playbook: “They have a marketing problem. This is a device that appeals, at most, to a large and shrinking consumer base. In our surveys, RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) and BlackBerry ranks last for developers.”

HP 웹OS의 터치패드는 HP브랜드가 높고, 수많은 HP 노트북에 임베디드 기본탑재 가능성이 높은 상황에서 웹OS에 대한 일반인들 인지도가 없는 것이 오히려 와일드카드가 될 수 있다. (체험 결과 웹OS는 개발자, 사용자 관점에서 가능성이 높은 시스템임)

HP’s TouchPad: “Really interesting. HP (NYSE: HPQ) has wide brand strength for consumers but nobody knows what WebOS is.  I really do think this is going to be a wildcard for consumers, we don’t know how well it’s going to sell.”

따라서 미디어 업계는 다음과 같은 원칙을 지키는 것이 바람직하다.

“1. Embrace new business models. 새 비즈니스 모델을 자연스럽게 껴안아라

“2. Don’t over-invest in apps - that market will reach $8bn on tablets alone by 2015. 지금 앱에 과대 투자하지 마라

“3. Don’t ignore the browser. 브라우저를 무시하지 마라 - 모바일 앱 보다는 모바일 웹을 먼저 제대로 구축하라.

“4. Prioitise apps in this order - iOS, HP, Android, RIM. 우선순위는 iOS, HP웹OS, 안드로이드, RIM플레이북 순으로 하라.

# BBC의 international iPlayer 아이패드 앱은 월 10불 이하로 결정될 것으로 보임. 뉴스코프의 더데일리가 4주 기준으로 봤을 때 월 4불인 것을 감안하면, 일반적으로 국내외 미디어들이 한달에 10달러 이상은 디지털 정기구독료로 받아내기 힘들 것으로 생각됨.

# MS, 태블릿 최적화된 윈도 차기버전, 2012년 중순 쯤에 출시할 듯. 윈도8이라고 불리는 이 OS는 ARM과의 최근 제휴가 반영되어, 각종 임베디드 단말기에 적용 가능할 것으로 생각됨.

Bloomberg reported late Thursday that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) doesn’t plan to release a version of Windows specifically for tablets until “the 2012 back-to-school season,” which is generally considered July or August. Apparently Microsoft is planning to develop a tablet-suitable version of Windows 7, rather than Windows Phone 7, and it’s going to take some time to make the PC operating system ready for tablets with smaller screen sizes, gesture-based interfaces, and long battery life requirements.

# 앞서 여러 차례 보고대로 미국서 교과서를 완전히 디지털라이징하기 위한 교육용 태블릿 사업 노 http://www.kno.com 가 12월 말 샘플 판매를 한 데 이어, 약 2달 이내에 정식 시판에 들어갈 예정. 벌써 3번째 출시일이 미뤄지는 것으로, 정식시판 초기라도 제한된 물량일 것으로 생각됨. 내부적으로 상당한 고민이 있을 것으로 보임.

트위터의 문제는 서비스나 제품이 아니라 비즈니스 모델이 없다는 것임. 트위터에 광고라는 개념이 존재하지 않기 때문에 미디어를 표방하면서도 역설적으로 비즈니스가 형성되지 못하고 있음. 현재까지는 트위터의 메인 비즈니스는 한정된 기업에 트위팅 검색 데이터 판매 정도에 머물고 있는 상황임. 

비즈니스 모델의 변화를 이끌어내지 못하고 있다는 의미임. 각 사무실에 복사기를 하드웨어 단위로 팔지 말고 장당 판매금액으로 과금해 비즈니스 모델의 변화를 이끌었던 제록스의 모습을 닮아야 한다는 예를 들고 있음.

“There is a very pervasive product-centric thinking,” he said. “There needs to be more of a business-model-centric approach.” Osterwalder isn’t saying that you shouldn’t have a product or obsess about making it awesome. What he is saying is that as a startup, it behooves you to be aware of business model options, even if the answers aren’t obvious right away.

For instance, “no advertising inside the Twitter stream” should have been spelled out loud and clear. If Twitter at some point thought of itself as a media network, then its business model option would have included controlling the front end(s) to the service. Instead, it didn’t do any of those things. One logical explanation is that the service itself was evolving as it went along.

Big news today from Rovio, the Finland-based developers behind the hugely successful Angry Birds mobile game: the company has picked up $42 million in funding, a first round round led by no less than Accel Partners and Atomico Ventures, the VC firm founded and led by Skype/Kazaa/Joost founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis. With the funding, Zennstrom will join the board of Rovio, according to the release. Other investors in this round of funding include Felicis Ventures.

앵그리버드는 출시 후 7500만건 다운로드를 달성했으며, 월 4000만 액티브 유저가 있을 정도로 가장 성공한 모바일 게임임. PC버전은 물론이고, 영화로도 제작될 정도. 내년까지 1억명 돌파가 예상됨. 개인적으로는 CEO들이 반드시 해 봐야 할 모바일 게임 표준 성공모델이라고 판단됨.

참고로 앵그리버드 초기 런칭 공동파트너였던 Chillingo는 지난해 말 EA에 인수된 바 있음.
