전 세계 네티즌들 사이에서 화제로 떠오른 유튜브 영상 속 하수구 괴물의 정체는 tubifex worms 이라는 지렁이의 일종이 군체를 형성한 것으로 보인다.

국내 매체 등 일부 언론들이 소개한 것은 '미국 노스캐롤라이나의 한 하수구에서 촬영된 하수구 괴물 영상이 등장했다'라는 내용을 담고 있다. 얼핏 보기에는 괴물 영화에서나 볼 수 있는 움직임이다. 일부에서는 "내시경 촬영이다" "조작이다" 등의 의견도 나왔다.

그러나 관련 전문가들은 "찾기 힘든 지렁이 종자 중 하나"라며 "보통 tubifex worms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubifex_tubifex 의 일종으로 군체 colony 를 형성하고 있는 것"이라고 설명했다. 한 덩어리로 뭉쳐 있는 장면을 카메라가 찍었을 뿐이지 특별한 괴물로 볼 필요가 없다는 의미다.
